A local jackpot is a progressive jackpot funded only by play on a single game, a single machine bank or a single casino. The pot grows from contributions made at that one place.
Because fewer players feed it, a local jackpot usually grows more slowly and pays smaller amounts than a networked jackpot, but it is won more often since fewer people are competing for it. In land-based venues, a bank of linked machines with a shared display is a typical local progressive.
Online, some casinos run their own in-house jackpots across selected games, funded by a share of stakes on those games. The terms, including which stakes qualify, are set out in the jackpot rules on the site.
