Free Slots and Demo Play: How Demo Modes Work in Great Britain

How free demo slots work, why GB sites verify your age before demo play, how demo and real-money play differ, and how to use demos to learn a game.

Free slots, or demo modes, let you play a slot with play-money credits instead of real money, so nothing you win or lose has any cash value. On GB-licensed sites you must be verified as 18 or over before you can use them, a rule that has applied since 7 May 2019.

Demos are useful for one thing above all: learning how a game works before you decide whether to stake on it. This guide covers how they work, how they differ from real play and how to get the most out of them.

What a demo mode is

A demo is the same game as the real-money version, running with an imaginary balance. You choose a stake, spin, see wins and trigger features, but the credits are only numbers on the screen. When the balance runs out, you can usually reload it.

Game studios offer demo versions of most titles. Casinos may make them available to logged-in, verified customers, and studios sometimes host demos on their own websites.

Why GB sites verify age before demo play

From 7 May 2019, GB-licensed operators must verify a customer’s age and identity before letting them gamble, and before they can play free-to-play versions of gambling games. Free games look and sound like the real thing, and the rule is there to stop under-18s getting used to slot play through demos.

In practice, that means you will usually need to open an account and pass verification before a casino lets you use its demo mode. You do not have to deposit. See age verification for the detail. Demos found elsewhere, such as on studio websites, are still products designed for adults.

Demo play versus real money

The game should be the same; the experience is not.

Demo Real money
Game maths and RTP Intended to be the same As stated in the rules
Results Random Random
Balance Play credits, refillable Your money
Winnings No cash value Withdrawable, subject to terms
Stake limits Set by the demo, and may not match the site £5 per spin (25+), £2 (18–24)
Emotional weight Low Real, and harder to walk away from

The last row matters most. Losing pretend credits is nothing like losing money you had other plans for. A demo cannot teach you how you will feel or behave when it is real.

Where demos can mislead

A good run means nothing

Demo results are random. A big win in demo mode does not mean the game is generous, and a dry run does not mean it is mean. Over a few hundred spins, results swing widely around the RTP, as our RTP guide explains.

Big demo balances hide volatility

Demos often start you with a large balance. That makes a high volatility game feel comfortable, because you can absorb long losing runs and still reach the features. With a real budget of a fraction of that, the same game can be over in minutes.

Features that do not exist on GB sites

Demos hosted for international audiences sometimes show features that are not offered on GB-licensed sites, notably bonus buy. The GB version of the game will not include it.

Settings that differ

Demo versions may show a different stake range or RTP from the version a particular casino offers. Always check the information screen of the real-money game at the site where you would play.

Using demos to learn

Used well, a demo answers practical questions before any money is involved.

  1. Read the paytable first. Use how to read a paytable as a checklist.
  2. Watch how wins are counted. Lines, ways, clusters or pay anywhere; see paylines vs ways to win.
  3. See how often features trigger. Spin a few hundred times and note roughly how long it takes. Do not treat this as a measurement; it is a feel.
  4. Watch what the features do. Free spins, hold and win, cascades and so on. Our bonus features guide has links for each.
  5. Notice returns smaller than the stake. Many “wins” in a demo return less than you staked. On real-money GB games, these must not be celebrated as wins.
  6. Use a realistic balance. If you can, play with a demo balance close to the budget you would actually use, at the stake you would actually use.

For a sense of how volatility plays out over many sessions, our volatility simulator runs thousands of illustrative sessions at once, which is more informative than one demo.

Free spins offers are not demo play

Casino promotions also use the word “free”. Promotional free spins are played on real-money games, and winnings can be withdrawn subject to the terms, such as wagering. They are a bonus, not a demo. Our guide to casino bonuses and wagering explains how they work, including the 10x wagering cap from 19 January 2026.

Demos and safer gambling

Demos remove the cost, not the pull. If you find yourself playing demos for hours, or using them to “practise” for real play in the belief that practice helps you win, it is worth stepping back. Slots are games of chance; there is no skill to practise. Free support is listed on our safer gambling page.

The short version

  • Demo modes use play credits with no cash value.
  • GB-licensed sites must verify your age and identity before demo play, since 7 May 2019.
  • A demo should run the same maths as the real game, but results are just as random.
  • Large demo balances hide how quickly volatile games can use up a real budget.
  • Use demos to learn the rules and features, not to judge a game’s generosity.
  • Promotional free spins are real-money play with terms attached, not demos.

Questions people ask

Why do I have to verify my age to play free slots?

Since 7 May 2019, GB-licensed operators must verify a customer's age and identity before letting them play free-to-play versions of gambling games. The aim is to stop under-18s using demo games.

Do demo slots pay the same as real-money slots?

A demo is meant to run the same game maths as the real-money version. Results in a demo are just as random, so a good run in demo mode tells you nothing about how real play will go.

Can I win real money playing free slots?

No. Demo credits have no cash value and cannot be withdrawn. Free spins offered as a promotion are a different thing: they use real-money games and can lead to withdrawable winnings, subject to the offer's terms.

Are social casino apps the same as demo slots?

Not exactly. Social casino apps often sell virtual coins and are not always licensed as gambling. Whether one falls under gambling regulation depends on how it works, so treat them with care.
