Online slot game design rules (2.5 seconds, no autoplay)

Since 31 October 2021: at least 2.5 seconds per spin, no autoplay, no turbo or slam stops, no fake celebrations.

The rule

Online slot design rules: each game cycle must last at least 2.5 seconds; autoplay is banned; features that speed play up or give an illusion of control (turbo, quick spin, slam stop) are banned; no sounds or images celebrating a 'win' that returns the same as or less than the stake; the player's net position (total wins or losses) and time played must be shown throughout the session. Reverse withdrawals were banned across all online gambling at the same time.

Who it applies to

Online slots offered to customers in Great Britain (reverse withdrawal ban: all online gambling products)

What it means for you

  • Every spin takes at least two and a half seconds. That caps a game at 1,440 spins an hour, which is the ceiling our RTP calculator uses.
  • You have to press spin every time: autoplay is gone, and so are turbo modes and the slam-stop button that let you cut a spin short.
  • A game may not play winning sounds or animations when it pays back the same as your stake or less. Those "wins" are losses or break-evens; see losses disguised as wins.
  • Your net position and how long you have been playing must be on screen throughout.
