Grid expansion is any feature that adds rows, reels or positions to a slot's playing area during play. A bigger grid means more symbols on screen and, in a ways-to-win game, more ways for wins to form.
What grid expansion is
Many modern slots start with a smaller grid than they can use. Rows might be locked at the top, reels might be greyed out, or the grid can grow sideways. Triggers vary: a win, a cascade, a special symbol, or a meter filling up. When the grid expands, the ways count or cluster space increases for as long as the expansion lasts.
How it works, step by step
- The game starts with a base grid, for example five reels of three rows, with extra rows hidden.
- Something triggers an expansion. Common triggers are a win removing symbols during cascading reels, a set number of special symbols, or a collection meter filling.
- One or more rows, reels or cells unlock.
- Wins are evaluated across the larger grid. In a ways game, adding a row to every reel of a 5×3 grid takes it from 243 to 1,024 ways.
- The expansion ends when the game's rule says so: at the end of the spin, the end of a bonus, or when a persistent meter resets.
Common variations
- Unlock by cascades: each consecutive cascade opens a row; the grid resets after the spin.
- Bonus-only expansion: the grid grows during free spins and stays large until the bonus ends.
- Persistent features: meters, collected symbols or unlocked rows that carry across paid spins. These are sometimes linked to a stake level, so changing stake may reset progress.
- Adding reels: Infinity Reels adds a reel after each win.
- Hold and win grids: in some hold and win features, filling rows unlocks more rows.
What it does to the maths and the feel
Expansion puts more of a game's return into the sequences that unlock it. Ordinary spins on the base grid tend to pay a little, while a fully expanded grid with a good symbol can pay a lot. That pattern raises volatility.
Persistent features need a note of caution. A meter that is nearly full can make a game look "ready to pay", and some players feel they should keep playing to reach it. The long-run return, the RTP, already includes the value of that meter, and chasing it does not change the house edge. It is fine to stop at any point.
Rules in Great Britain
Grid expansion features are available on GB-licensed sites under the normal stake limits and game design rules. Those rules require net position and time played to be shown on screen, which is a useful check if a persistent meter is drawing you on. Our safer gambling page lists free support if you want it.
Questions people ask
Does an expanded grid stay expanded?
It depends on the game. Some expansions last only for the current spin or cascade sequence, others last for a bonus round, and a few persist across paid spins.
Can I tell when a persistent feature is close to triggering?
Usually the meter is shown on screen. Progress is real, but it does not make the game more generous overall, because the RTP already accounts for it.
Is grid expansion the same as Infinity Reels?
Infinity Reels is one specific form, adding reels to the right after each win. Grid expansion is the broader idea of adding rows, reels or cells.
