Category C is the machine category for the typical pub fruit machine. Pubs and other premises licensed to sell alcohol can have Category C machines, and they also appear in adult gaming centres, bingo halls, members' clubs and the adult-only areas of family entertainment centres.
Category C machines are for adults only; pubs are responsible for making sure under-18s do not play them. Maximum stakes and prizes are set in regulations under the Gambling Act 2005, and the number of machines a pub may have depends on its permissions.
Above Category C are the higher-stake Category B machines in casinos, betting shops and similar venues; below it is Category D. For current stake and prize limits, see our fruit machines page.
