Category B covers the higher-stake gaming machines in Great Britain. It is split into sub-categories, B1 to B4, each allowed in different types of premises and each with its own limits.
B1 machines are found in casinos. Other B sub-categories appear in betting shops, bingo halls, adult gaming centres and some members' clubs. The machines in betting shops, sometimes called FOBTs (fixed-odds betting terminals), are Category B.
The maximum stakes and prizes for each category and sub-category are set in regulations made under the Gambling Act 2005, and the number of machines each premises can have is also limited. Category B machines are for adults only.
Machines in pubs are Category C, and the lowest tier is Category D. For current stake and prize limits, see our fruit machines page.
