Pay anywhere

A pay system where enough of the same symbol anywhere on the screen wins, with no need to be adjacent or on a line.

Pay anywhere is a pay system in which a set number of identical symbols anywhere on the screen forms a win. Position does not matter, symbols do not need to touch, and there are no lines, which is why it is also called scatter pays: every symbol behaves like a scatter.

What pay anywhere is

A typical pay anywhere game uses a grid of six reels by five rows. After each spin the game simply counts each symbol. If there are, say, eight or more of one symbol, that symbol pays, and higher counts pay more. The specific threshold and pay steps are set out in each game's paytable.

It sits alongside ways to win and cluster pays as an alternative to paylines. Of the four, it has the simplest rule to check by eye.

How it works, step by step

  1. You set a total stake per spin.
  2. The grid fills with symbols.
  3. The game counts every symbol type on screen.
  4. Any symbol at or above the minimum count pays its paytable value for that count.
  5. Winning symbols are removed and the remaining symbols fall, with new ones dropping in from above. This is a tumble, a form of cascading reels.
  6. The count runs again, and the spin continues until a tumble produces no new win.

Common variations

  • Multiplier symbols: during free spins, many pay anywhere games drop symbols carrying a multiplier value, which is applied to the total win of that tumble sequence. Some add these together; some keep a running total across the whole bonus.
  • Scatter-triggered free spins: a separate scatter symbol, counted the same way, triggers the bonus.
  • Different thresholds: some games pay from five symbols, some from eight, some from more.
  • Cluster hybrids: some games mix rules, paying certain symbols anywhere and others in clusters.

What it does to the maths and the feel

Because only the count matters, small wins are common in tumbling sequences. The base game in many pay anywhere titles returns modest amounts, often below the stake, while multiplier symbols in the bonus round carry much of the potential. That design tends to produce high volatility: the gap between a typical session and a rare big one is wide.

None of that changes the long-run return, which is fixed by the game's RTP. With an illustrative RTP of 96%, someone staking £1 a spin for 500 spins would stake £500 in total and expect, in theory, to lose about £20, but the actual result of any one session can be far from that in either direction. The RTP calculator runs the sum for any figures you enter.

Rules in Great Britain

Pay anywhere games are available on GB-licensed sites, subject to the usual stake limits and game design rules. Two points stand out here. First, tumbles mean one paid spin can contain several wins, and a total equal to or less than the stake must not be celebrated with sounds or imagery. Second, these games are often promoted elsewhere with a feature buy, which is not offered on GB-licensed sites; on a GB-licensed site the free spins are reached by landing the scatters.

Questions people ask

Is pay anywhere the same as cluster pays?

No. Cluster pays needs matching symbols to touch each other. Pay anywhere only counts how many of a symbol are on screen, wherever they are.

How many symbols do I need for a win?

It varies by game; eight or more of the same symbol is a common minimum on a 6×5 grid. The paytable shows the exact counts.

Why is it sometimes called scatter pays?

Because every symbol behaves like a scatter: position does not matter, only the count. The names describe the same idea.
